An Antagonist’s Guide To the Assholes Of Los Angeles traces a history, theory, and sites for creative agonistic social and political practice in LA. The guide annotates over 80 places; banks, businesses, politicians and polluters, war contractors, institutions, a troll, a yeller, and a cruel mis-dial. The list was sourced through an open public call and research. The guide frames for its users sites worthy of creative exploration throughout Los Angeles. We hope your practice benefits from it.

The guide also includes short essays framing antagonism within Los Angeles’ social and cultural history; contributions by The Llano Del Rio Collective, Marisa Jahn, Lisa Anne Auerbach, Laura Pullido, and Jennifer Flores Sternad.

The guide is available for free to all residents of LA County. Guides may be found at designated locations, or may be requested (by county residents) by post by contacting llanodelrio@gmail.com while they last.

8 rung Ladder Of Citizen Participation climbed at Department of Housing and Urban Development, Washington DC, 2012.

A Ladder Of Citizen Participation is an influential text written by Sherry Arnstein in 1969, and a visualization recently developed in Washington DC. The essay suggests 8 different typologies of governmental/citizen participation and non-participation. In context the text reflects upon President LBJ’s Great Society legislation which specifically mandated citizen participation in shaping urban renewal practices, Model Cities. The citizen participation element in the policy (which contributed to the establishment of HUD) was meant to programmatically  address historic marginalization and dis-empowerment of “have-not” populations by those in power. As an extension of civil-rights legislation, citizen participation within Model Cities legislation ideally was meant to create agency amongst the disenfranchised.

Arnstein’s suggests 8 rungs to the ladder towards CITIZEN CONTROL; manipulation, therapy, informing, consultation, placation, partnership, delegated power, citizen control.

In November 2nd, 2012 we tried to climb this ladder at HUD in Washington, DC.

This weekend is the Venice Beach Biennial. Kimberly Varella, Lisa Anne Auerbach and I made a 32 page publication, a catalog of sorts, for the event. Its available for free down at the beach. For the LA Weekly’s preview of the event, our piece got a little write up.
